The consulate history, the relation with the Lebanese Government
1969: The excellent friendship and cooperation between Singapore and Lebanon continues to grow. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 3rd May of that year.
1974: Singapore’s then Minister for Foreign Affairs H.E. Mr. S Rajaratnam visited Lebanon.
1974: Mr Joseph Habis was appointed as the Honorary Consul of Singapore in Lebanon
1996: Mr Joseph Habis was awarded the Bintang Bakti Masyarakat (Public Service Star) by the President of the Republic of Singapore in recognition of his service to Singapore.
1996: Since that year Singapore has also been training Lebanese officials under the Singapore Cooperation program (SCP) in area such as port management, productivity management, taxation and economic development.
1997, then Lebanese Minister of State for Financial Affairs Fouad Siniora and late Minister Bassel Fleihan made a study visit to Singapore to discuss ways to strenghten economic cooperation. Honorary Consul General Joseph Habis accompanied Minister Fouad Siniora on this visit.
1997 The Lebanese permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Samir Moubarak, also visited Singapore in March, under Singapore’s Permanent Representative’s Invitation Program.
1997: The national Cedar Medal/Knight Grade was given to Mr. Joseph Habis by H. E. President Elias Hraoui
1999: Singapore Trade Development Board (now renamed International Enterprise Singapore) organized a Trade Mission to Lebanon in April, to explore opportunities in tourism, port development and industrial parks.
2001: A team of officers from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) visited Lebanon in August to assist the Lebanese Government in its implementation of its Value Added Tax (VAT) project.
2006: Third award of Mr. Joseph Habis order of the National Cedar Medal/Officer Grade, given by H.E. President of the Lebanese Republic General Emile Lahoud, in consideration to his national and worldwide valuable services in Diplomatic, Economical, Development and Prosperity Fields and to his efforts in straightening the relationship between Lebanon and Singapore.
July 2006: Due to the Israeli war against Lebanon in July 2006, the Singaporean Humanitarian Organization “Mercy Relief” supplied Lebanon, through Mr. Habis, with humanitarian supplies and on the behalf of the Lebanese government; the Minister of Education took charge of distributing the humanitarian supplies to the harmed Lebanese regions. The Lebanese government thanked the organization for this initiative.
Singapore pledged S $ 50.000 to the Flash appeal for the Humanitarian needs of Lebanon to the United Nation, to provide for the emergency, foods, shelter , healthcare and protection needs of civilians affected by the outgoing situation in Lebanon.
A check of S $200.000.00 donation for aid relief to Lebanon, handed by H.E. Minister of State of ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Ms. Yu-Foo Yee Shoo to a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross on a ceremony, at the headquarters of the Red Cross Singapore.
This fund will complement the Singapore’s Government contribution to Lebanon, and will be used to provide relief facilities to the people of South Lebanon.
General Achraf Rifi, Director of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces, , honored The dean of the Honorary Consular Corps and Honorary Consul General of Singapore in Lebanon Mr. Joseph Habis by presenting to him an Honorific Shield at the head office of the ISF as a symbol of Mr. Habis’s efforts and accomplishments and services rendered for the good of Lebanon and for the best efforts for Bilateral Relations between Lebanon and Singapore.
